Eligibility to play for a County

During any one season (September to August) a player can only represent one county in competition (this may be a different county in online competition). ECF membership (minimum bronze level for over-the-board and Supporter level for online) is required as games are ECF rated. A player must be associated with a county in one of the following ways to be eligible to play for that county:

(i) Birth in that county.

(ii) Five years’ domicile in that county at any time.

(iii) Two months’ immediate previous and present membership of a club either in or affiliated to that County.

(iv) One month’s immediately previous and present domicile in that County.

(v) Present attendance as a student at a school, college or university in that County.

When completing the next question, please note that Middlesex comprises Barnet, Brent, Camden, City of London, Ealing, Enfield, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Richmond on Thames, Tower Hamlets, and Westminster.

Player's Donation (see next question) is a voluntary payment which we ask county players to pay each time they play in a home match for Middlesex. The guideline figure is currently £5, but you may pay more, less, or nothing: it won't affect your eligibility for selection.

These donations significantly improve our county chess association's financial strength and help us to fulfil our constitutional purpose of fostering chess throughout Middlesex and notably in the SCCU County Championships. We value not only your playing skills but also your financial contributions that are so willingly and generously given.

You may pay Player's Donation in the following ways:

  • by bank transfer to sort code 12-11-03, account number 00726567 before or after the match
  • by cash to our Treasurer if present at the match
  • by cash to a captain

After our last home match of the season the Treasurer will email all players who have paid less than the guideline figure times the home matches they've played in, advising them of the unpaid balance. If you've paid more than guideline x home matches the Treasurer will treat the excess as a donation unless you request a refund before the last home match of the season.
