Player donation

The Council on 6 July 2023 accepted the necessity of funding county chess wholly or partly through player donation (i.e. a fixed sum collected from each Middlesex player at every home match) during any season in which League fees and any other income are expected to be insufficient.

The Treasurer after consulting county match captains accordingly decided that until League fees and other income are sufficient, each player should be asked to pay a voluntary player donation of £5 for each home match in which he or she plays. Player donations (formerly called Board Fee) have been collected on that basis from the 2023/24 season onwards.

In 2023/24 the Association's income would not have been sufficient without player donation, and in 2024/25 barely sufficient. Our budget for 2025/26 shows a surplus less than our expected income from player donation.

Player donation is collected normally by the Treasurer, who attends most home matches. If the Treasurer is not present, Team Captains may collect the money or the Treasurer may email players after the match. The Treasurer may also email players who have forgotten to pay.

£5 is a guideline figure; players are welcome to pay more or less than that sum.

Player donations are voluntary. Non-payment of player donation does not affect any player's selection for future matches.

Donations generally

Donations from  member clubs, officers, players, parents and others are always welcome.

Regular monthly donations - even of small sums - are especially appreciated as they can yield substantial annual sums relatively painlessly for the donors!
